ASTM A615 Grade 40: This specification covers deformed and plain carbon-steel bars for concrete reinforcements in cut lengths and coils. Materials considered under this specification are available in Grades 40 [280], 60 [420], and 75 [520]. Steel samples shall be rolled from properly identified heats of mold cast or strand cast steel using electric-furnace, basic-oxygen, or open-hearth. Heat analysis shall be performed wherein steel materials shall conform to required compositions of carbon, manganese, phosphorus, and sulfur. Steel specimens shall also undergo tensile tests and shall conform to required values of tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation. Steel samples shall also undergo deformation tests, tension tests, and bend tests. Final products shall be marked by a tag. Bars produced to the above specifications are marked with the size number and letter N.

 

General Information about Hot Rolled ASTM A615 Grade 40:


APPLICATIONS:

ASTM A615 Grade 40 rebar is a common steel bar and is generally used as a tensioning device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures holding the concrete in compression. It is usually formed from carbon steel and is given ridges for better mechanical anchoring into the concrete.

MACHINING AND WELDING:

ASTM A615 Grade 40: The American Welding Society (AWS) D 1.4 sets out the practices for welding rebar in the U.S. Without special consideration, the only rebar that is ready to weld is W grade (Low-alloy — A706). Rebar that is not produced to the ASTM A706 specification is generally not suitable for welding without calculating the "carbon-equivalent". Material with a carbon-equivalent of less than 0.55 can be welded. (AWS D1.4)

ASTM A615 Grade 40 reinforcing bars are capable of being bent cold around a pin without cracking on the outside of the bent portion, as follows:

Under 3/4” diameter – Will bend 90º around a pin four times own diameter.

3/4” diameter & over – Will bend 90º around a pin five times own diameter.
